i have been reading I thought my Soul would Fly one of many series from Dear America. So far its about a girl named Patsy who is a slave to Mistress Davis. She lived in Mars Bluff, South Carolina,1865. She wears homespun clothes and is trying to read and write secertly. She learns by working near the teaching room. Patsy makes candle out of beef fat so she can write in her journal and so she can learn to read the books from her owners libaray. She will start to read whenever she she had a spare moment or spare time on her watch. But mostly she cooked, cleaned, ironed, and helped Cook(the cook of the house). She was a slave during the Civil War and her Mistress helped the Confederate Army. They gave them food and fram animals. She went to Church every Sunday with the other Slaves in the neighborhood. She ate leftover food from the Mistresses dinner, sometimes there was no food.
