Caitlins 1st Entry

This book tells me how hard a life was for a slave. It took place in Virginia on the Belmont Plantation during 1859. This particular slave worked in her masters home, cleaning and cooking with her fellow slaves. Clotee, the main character, was without a mom since the age 11. She now is supported by her friends who work on the plantation. Through rain or snow they still have to work. Clotee manages to teach her self how to read and write with her secret diary which she hides behind a lose brick in her hut. This books makes me grateful for what i have today. It explains to me how hard it was for slaves in the middle 1800's. Sometimes Clotee would lurk over her masters shoulder to sneak a couple paragraphs while fanning Miz.Lily, her owner. This shows me how dedicated she is to learning how to read and getting a good education despite the law. Wtihin the story a new girl comes to the plantation. A strong braud girl named Spicy who she, and other girls think is a spy paid by Miz.Lily to see what the slaves talk about. Spicy becomes great friends, yet she is quiet when it comes to people she is not aware of. So far this book has taught me a life lesson, that to live life to its fullest. This book is a great inspiration to those who think life is hard, it shows them what hard life really is.
